CULTUS LAKE – Several young students from India studying in Canada have drowned this year across Canada and the latest drowning at Cultus lake could add to the total.

RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating a drowning death of a man in Cultus Lake on Saturday.

“(We) are investigating to determine how, where, when and by what means he came to his death. Due to privacy we will not be releasing or confirming his name or age,” said B.C. Coroners Service spokesperson Andy Watson.

But according to social media posts, the young man who drowned is being identified as an Indian student named Manpreet Singh, who was studying at the Kwantlen University in Surrey and belonged to Village Chakk Shareef, Gurdaspur, Punjab.

Paramedics and the Cultus Lake Fire Department responded to a report of a possible drowning at the popular swimming destination at around 3:10 p.m.

Cultus Lake Fire Department chief Warren Mazuren says the body was pulled from the lake by a bystander at Entrance Bay near the 2900-block of Columbia Valley Road, reported the Vancouver Sun.

The Upper Fraser Valley RCMP, who provided air support in the search, say the drowning victim was an adult, but released no other information.

RCMP Cpl. Mike Rail said, as of 6:15 p.m. Saturday, police were still in the process of contacting next of kin.

Rail said criminality was not suspected in the death.
