If we’re going to try to search for a silver lining with all that has happened in the past year, it is being able to save travel budget for some people. Many have been craving to go out and explore the world. With the pandemic, travelers ended up being satisfied with looking at old photos and possible destinations while also setting money aside for them. There are certainly a lot of places to visit so one of the best ways to narrow down the list is to opt for eco-friendly destinations. These are getting more attention with the heightened environmental awareness people have nowadays.

There could be a number of ways to define an eco-friendly destination such as a certain place only using natural resources or requiring tourists to bring their own amenities. It sure varies from one location to another. Though what’s really important is what people do as they travel more than the regulations of the place itself and thus sustainable travel minimizes the negative impacts of tourism. While keeping this in mind, let us still take a look at six beautiful eco-friendly destinations that could make your next trip extra special.

FINLAND: One of the most impressive countries when it comes to effective environmental policies! The same actually goes for other Scandinavian countries such as Sweden and Iceland. They give high importance to the use of renewable energies as well as lessening air and water pollution with their innovative programs. If you’re looking for a particular place to visit in Finland, go to the port city of Helsinki which aims to rid itself of cars in less than three decades from now. Moreover, it developed a pedestrian and bicycle corridor which people totally love.

COSTA RICA: This is probably the most glaring eco-friendly destination in Central America with its rich wildlife, home to a wide range of species. It holds around 5% of the world’s biodiversity and offers tourists the exciting experience to be one with nature while being able to enjoy their stay in eco-conscious hotels and restaurants. What’s more amazing is that they support their local farmers by directly acquiring ingredients from them. The majority of the country gets its electricity from renewable sources as well. All these are made possible with firm laws that govern conservation efforts, rainforest protection schemes, and consistent tree planting in coordination with landowners among many others. If you’re to visit this beautiful country, stop by the La Fortuna which offers breathtaking views of the Arenal Volcano and the Osa Peninsula to maximize living like a local. There are so many places to visit in this country which is one of the happiest places in the world. Thus, knowing your budget is a must to revel in what they have to offer without worries.

THE GALAPGO ISLANDS: If you’re looking for the thrill of discovering species that can be found nowhere else in the world, Galapagos Islands is the place for you. You must thoroughly plan your trip early because there is only a certain number of tourists that they accept to preserve the condition of the islands which largely belong to national parks. This is located over 600 miles of the coast of Ecuador and was declared as the first Natural World Heritage site in 1978. They saw the importance of preserving nature early and their countrymen get to enjoy it today as they should. We’re lucky that they’re sharing the beauty of their place with us. It’s no question that travelers must be mindful of sustainable practices especially because their conservation of various natural resources such as water and energy is paramount.

BHUTAN: A place known for its Gross Domestic Happiness. Wondering how they get to keep their people happy? A solid connection with the earth and the deliberate development of their tourism to protect their beautiful nature and culture. Bhutan is a Buddhist kingdom situated on the Himalayas’ eastern edge that seriously values sustainability. It even has a law that ensures 60% of the country must remain forested for future generations. Furthermore, they implement a tourism tax that goes back to the communities. Everything is such a wonder in this majestic country--both the place itself and the system that everyone follows. You’ll be surprised that Bhutan actually absorbs more carbon than it emits! If you want to experience the greenest travel possible, you know where to go.

PATAGONIA: If you’re more of a landscape person, Patagonia has tons to offer as the favorite destination of nature lovers. It is located at the southern tip of the world with numerous views that will take your breath away with its mountains, lakes, and glaciers among others. The Torres del Paine National Park is a must-go place in Patagonia with its pristine condition. It is also recommended that you explore on foot or horseback to have the least environmental impact. If you’re used to cityscapes, brace yourself when you visit this place which you might think is out of this world.

NEW ZEALAND:  Are you a fan of Lord of the Rings? Then, this place must already be on your bucket list. The landscapes, volcanic plateaus, fjords, forests, and many more don’t seem to have an end. Everywhere seems to be a postcard-worthy picture that is actually preserved through their national park system and other laws. Some areas that are protected include the  Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Reserve and Mount Cook National Park. The country is also aiming to be fossil fuel-free by 2025 by using sufficient geothermal energy sources instead. Just go and responsibly explore this incredible country! It even has luxurious eco-lodges which could make your trip extra carbon-free.

While there are many places on earth that remain green and beautiful such as those listed above, remember that the people living in and governing these countries are the ones who made it possible. Respect their nature and culture when you travel once restrictions ease. Also, may you earn the aspiration to make your own country as delightful as theirs or better!
