“As the World is marking the 25th death anniversary of the Human Rights crusader Jaswant Singh Khalra this week, we call upon the Human Rights Council of United Nations in a letter sent to the council to declare September 6th as “Jaswant Singh Khalra day”. TORONTO – Citing Human Rights as a major concern in India with grave violations taking place and the world continuing to act as a spectator to these violations, a Sikh-Canadian group wants United Nations to act and also declare September 6rd as “Jaswant Singh Khalra” Day . 

“We ask the Human Rights Council of United Nations to take notice of the mass violations of Human Rights of minorities in India,” said Sukhminder Singh Hansra, a spokesperson for Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar Canada. 

“As the World is marking the 25th death anniversary of the Human Rights crusader Jaswant Singh Khalra this week, we call upon the Human Rights Council of United Nations in a letter sent to the council to declare September 6th as “Jaswant Singh Khalra day”. We also request to bring to justice against the perpetrators and the state responsible for his abduction and murder.”

The Group said on the website of the Human Rights Council of United Nations, it reads “the Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and they should take steps to address the wrongs against Khalra. 


Jaswant Singh Khalra investigated and documented that 25 thousand Sikhs were murdered and cremated as unidentified bodies just in few districts of Punjab by the Punjab Police and other law enforcement agencies of India. Due to these finding, Khalra was abducted and murdered, added Hansra. 

“We thank the council members of three major cities of Canada, City of Brampton, New Westminster BC, Burnaby, BC, Surrey, BC, Victoria, BC and Regina and others which have proclaimed September 6 as “Jaswant Singh Khalra Day” said Parminder Singh, President of Youth Akali Dal Amritsar Canada East. 

The human rights crusader was first featured on Ankhila Punjab Radio in 1989 when he was a chairman of “Jabbar Virodhi Front” or “Anti Repression Front”. He later joined Shiromani Akali Dal’s human rights wing as the General Secretary. His role during these years was to investigate and document disappearances of Sikhs in Punjab in the hands of Punjab Police and other law enforcement agencies. 

Khalra had visited Canada twice. In April 1995, he was invited by then Liberal MP Colleen Buaumier, attended a meeting at the Canadian Parliament about Human Rights. He also attended the 3rd anniversary of Ankhila Punjab TV at Ontario Khalsa Darbar in Mississauga. In June 1995, Khalra was invited by the World Sikh Organization to speak at the West Block of the Canadian Parliament at an annual parliamentary dinner. 

“We also ask the Government of Canada to declare September 6th every year as Jaswant Singh Khalra Day. Our organization in Canada and in India is willing to work with the Government of Canada to provide any assistance required.,” the Group said.
