COQUITLAM – Coquitlam saw multiple shootings last week with the latest one on Saturday afternoon led to one person being fatally wounded and eventually dying from his injuries in hospital.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was deployed to the third day-time shooting in Coquitlam which left one man dead.

“We understand that these last three days have been incredibly stressful to the community and we want to assure the public that our officers are working tirelessly to advance all of these investigations” said Inspector Darren Carr, Operations Support Officer for Coquitlam RCMP.  “Public safety is our top priority. These incidents are isolated, targeted and involving a small group of individuals.”

On January 6, at approximately 4:14 p.m., Coquitlam RCMP responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Westwood Street and Glen Drive in Coquitlam. Frontline officers attended the scene and located one man suffering from life-threatening injuries. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

On January 7, IHIT was deployed and took conduct of the investigation and began working closely in partnership with the Coquitlam RCMP, BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS).

IHIT investigators have identified the victim as a 21-year old man from Coquitlam. Out of respect for the family’s wish for privacy at this time, the victim’s name will not be released publicly.

“This was a targeted shooting that happened in a busy area, with no regard for the safety of others,” says Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “We’re working closely with our partners in Coquitlam to determine what connection, if any, this has to the other recent shooting.”

IHIT is asking any witnesses or anyone who was in the area of Westwood Street and Glen Drive, between 4:00 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. with dash-camera video to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Coquitlam RCMP are asking for information from anyone who may have witnessed the shooting that occurred this evening on Saturday, January 6, 2024 in the area of Westwood Street and Glen Drive between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to contact Police. Investigators are also asking anyone who may have dash-cam, cellphone or home surveillance video to contact Coquitlam RCMP.
