ABBOTSFORD - A 48-year-old Indo-Canadian man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the 2023 death of an Abbotsford man.
On July 18, 2023, at 7:06 a.m., the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) were notified of a suspicious death in the 31000-block of Madeira Place, in Abbotsford. Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased 62-year-old man, later identified as Imtiaz Hussain of Abbotsford.

As a result of evidence obtained by the investigators, a 46-year-old Chanchal Badwal was arrested and taken into custody.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and worked in close partnership with AbbyPD and Forensic Identification Services (FIS) to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
On July 19, 2023, Chanchal Badwal of Abbotsford, the same man who had been arrested, was charged in relation to the homicide.

On November 14, 2025, Badwal, now 48 years old, appeared in provincial court in Abbotsford where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled in the coming weeks.
“His life was taken away suddenly by the accused’s act of violence, and our thoughts continue to be with Mr. Hussain’s loved ones as the court proceedings come to an end,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
