SURREY –An Indo-Canadian man from Surrey has been charged with impersonating a police officer after numerous recent cases of gangsters and criminals posing as cops as well as a Surrey cop who was arrested for allegedly being in bed with gangsters.
Police sad BC Prosecution Services has approved charges against26 year-old Gurmandeep Singh Atwal from Surrey after he allegedly posed as a peace officer at a home in Richmond on the evening of January 29th, 2021.
Atwal faces one count of Personating a Peace Officer, contrary to section 130(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, and one count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, contrary to section 90(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
Atwal was arrested on February 11th and remains in custody.
He will make his next court appearance by video on Tuesday, February 16th.
The Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit continues to investigate.
Atwal’s is not the first case of criminals posing as cops. Earlier this month, occupants of a car with flashing red and blue police lights started pulling over vehicles in Langley.
This wasn’t your average roadblock. Police allege the people inside the fake police car were participants in the Lower Mainland gang conflict, reported Vancouver Sun.
Sgt. Brenda Winpenny, of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, said the disturbing incident isn’t the only recent event where those involved in the violence are posing as police officers to target enemies.
The fake traffic stops were reported to police and CFSEU’S uniformed gang enforcement team “very quickly — I think within 24 hours — located that vehicle, stopped it, arrested the people inside,” Winpenny said. “It’s still under investigation, but we’re anticipating some charges in relation to that.”
Gangsters aware of the tactic may confuse real police for their rivals and that could lead to “an officer getting hurt,” Winpenny said.
There was a similar incident in Chilliwack last month.
Recently, an Indo-Canadian woman died after two men posing as policemen invaded her home in Vancouver west side.
Two suspects charged with killing 78-year-old Usha Singh in her Cambie area home Jan. 31 posed as officers to gain entry to the house, according to Vancouver police. Pascal Bouthilette, 41, has been charged with second-degree murder and Sandy Parisian, 47, is charged with manslaughter.
