MUMBAI - Punjabi film and music superstar Diljit Dosanjh starring in a bio-pic on legendary Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila is headed to Netflix.

Renowned Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali is working with Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra to tell the dramatic life story of Chamkila and Amarjyot Kaur. Initially it was thought it was a theatrical release film but if reports are to be believed, it won't be distributed in theatres. Instead, it will be available on Netflix.

Diljit Dosanjh and Imtiaz Ali have joined hands for the first time for the upcoming biopic of Amar Singh Chamkila. Several pictures and videos of Diljit Dosanjh have surfaced on the internet. The movie also features Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot Kaur. The film recently completed its filming which was exclusively shot in Punjab.

The 'Chamkila' biopic has already created a huge buzz among the audience with Dosanjh's new avatar as 'Chamkila'. Although fans were eagerly waiting for the film to be released in theaters, it is now reported that it will only be released on Netflix. However, no official confirmation has been made by the makers or the actors.

The film is also creating some controversy with the film’s subject matter with some Sikh organizations concerned with the portrayal of the insurgency aspect of the story and who murdered the great singer as well as the sexualized and bravado style of Chamkila’s songs.

While many Punjabi film and music artists are taking part in the film, well known Punjabi actor Amritpal Singh, aka Billa Paaji, who has worked with director Imtiaz Ali, refused to take part in the film on principle and told Ali that this subject was not worthy of such large film treatment.

“I’m adamantly against the film’s subject matter and I think it’s a wasted effort by artists like Diljit and Imtiaz,” Singh told DESIBUZZCanada during the filming of Sukshinder Shinda’s music video for the Jago Aaya track off his upcoming Munda Turban Wala album.

The film will certainly draw a big audience when it’s released as it has the curiosity factor from the story angle and the involvement of top stars like Dosanjh and Chopra and director Ali makes it an event film.
