Controversial Jaspal Atwal Charged With Uttering Threats Against Punjabi Radio Station Host
Court records show Surrey Atwal is accused of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in connection with an alleged incident on April 23. Although details of the event are not known, it is believed that the person Atwal threatened is a well known Punjabi radio host. Atwal, who spent more than one day in jail following his arrest in later April, is expected to appear in court next on May 24. He believed to have retained Surrey-based criminal lawyer Marvin Stern to represent him.
SURREY – The controversial attempted assassin Jaspal Atwal, who caused an uproar after he got into one of PM Justin Trudeau’s events during his sabotaged s India visit, was arrested and charged last month with uttering threats.
Court records show Surrey Atwal is accused of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in connection with an alleged incident on April 23. Although details of the event are not known – it is believed that the person Atwal threatened is a well known Punjabi radio host
Atwal, who was convicted in 1986 of trying to murder an Indian official who was visiting Canada, ended up in India after Indian government granted him visa while other former Sikh radicals remain blacklisted and unable to visit India
In February, a picture emerged of Atwal with Justin Trudeau's wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau during the Prime Minister's trip to India, raising questions about security protocols because of Atwal’s notorious past.
But Atwal insists he has since moved on with his life, and renounces terrorism in all forms.
In March, Atwal's lawyer said his client was allowed on the trip because he no longer is considered a security threat, and that India granted him three entry visas last year.
Atwal, who spent more than one day in jail following his arrest in later April, is expected to appear in court next on May 24.
Atwal is believed to have retained Surrey-based criminal lawyer Marvin Stern to represent him.
The person who filed the complaint against Atwal is believed to be a local radio host and the charges are apparently related to an altercation between him and Atwal last month, according to a source.
That person is also believed to have complained to police about Atwal nearly eight months ago, prior to the ruckus created by Atwal’s presence at an official event in honour of Trudeau in Mumbai.
